If you are thinking of throwing away your old spoons because they no longer work for you, don’t rush. Cate Blanchett and a Swedish designer have an idea for how you can reuse them.
Blanchett, who is always the center of attention on every red carpet, did not disappoint again with her choice of attire. While some may find her outfit strange, there is actually a deeper meaning behind simply drawing the cameras to you.
The actress has a tendency to wear her old clothes repeatedly – a rare move for movie stars who can count on famous designers for every event they are invited to. Some of Kate’s peers take the opportunity to choose new looks for each red carpet, which, however, does not impact the environment positively. The so-called “fast fashion” that changes trends from season to season threatens our planet, as too many harmful emissions are released during the production of each subsequent model.
And although Blanchett’s latest look is something we haven’t seen her wear before, the outfit is not technically new.
For the premiere of her new film in Los Angeles, Borderlands, on Tuesday, Kate arrived in custom outfits from the brand Hodakova that gave new life to a common kitchen item. Swedish designer Ellen Khodakova Larsson assembled 102 spoons from various families in Sweden, carefully stacking the utensils on top of each other to create a unique armor-shaped top. The design featured a bare back and was complemented by black reconstructed tapered pants and black leather shoes.

Most recently, Blanchett again chose Hodakova for her event. But then her corset was made from two silver trays not spoons, but the idea was the same. Ellen Khodakova started her brand in 2021, aiming primarily to focus on inventing designs from recycled materials. According to Blanchett’s personal stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, the Swedish designer is completely changing the conversation around sustainable fashion.
“Ellen uses relics like these vintage spoons taken from the interior of Sweden to create unexpected proportions and new associations. Grandma would be proud” Stewart wrote on social media.
Khodakova is definitely finding her niche in Hollywood, attracting more and more stars as clients. Emma Corinne recently wore a leather mini dress made from vintage belts for a Deadpool and Wolverine screening at Comic-Con.
Over the years, Cate Blanchett has consistently spoken out about the fast fashion crisis. According to her, trends have shifted from seasonal to interseasonal and multis seasonal, with brands even creating designs for outlet stores. “When we know that the world consumes 18 billion clothes per year, which is 400% more than a decade ago, we think that things are not going well” says the actress in 2020.
